Pendant lighting comes in all sorts of sizes, materials, and functions and can get a little overwhelming. Thankfully we pride ourselves in our pendant knowledge and have collated some of our most asked questions below regarding selecting the right size for the right space.

1. How large should a pendant be over a dining room table?

The selection of a pendant or chandelier over a dining table will depend on the size and shape of the table itself. The room size and ceiling height will also influence the selection criteria.
When it comes to the actual selection in the case of a ROUND TABLE, we usually apply the “one third” principal. This in essence means that the light fitting needs to fill about a third of the diameter of the table. If a table has a diameter of say 1.8 meters, then the chandelier should be in the region of 600mm. This will mean that there will be equal space the left and right of the chandelier itself.
In the case of a RECTANGULAR table a “50%” principal can apply where a table of 1.2m in width can accommodate a pendant or chandelier with 600mm diameter leaving 300mm on either side. There may be situations where tables of over 2.5 meters in length could require a matching pair of chandeliers. This will also largely depend on the room size and alternative lighting sources.
In general terms, a pendant needs to be suspended with about 800mm from the top of the table to the underside of the chandelier. This is called the “conversation space”. This may vary depending on the ceiling height and room size.

2. How many pendants do I put over my kitchen island bench?

Positioning and spacing of pendants above an island bench will depend on the size of the island itself.
In the main, we can apply the “one third” or “50%” principal where an island of 1.2m in width can accommodate a chandelier or pendant with a diameter of between 400mm and 600mm leaving between 300mm and 400mm on either side.
The number of pieces above an island bench will be dependent on the overall length of the island itself. In the case of a 3m island, using medium sized pendants we would suggest a gap of between 800mm and 1 meter allowing for 3 pendants.
